Ilaiyaraaja, the Maestro, Plays Sydney in 2026

Some concerts you attend. An Ilaiyaraaja concert you show up to the way you show up to a family wedding: three generations, everyone quietly emotional by the third song, nobody entirely sure why. The Isaignani, the composer a young A.R. Rahman famously came up playing keyboards behind, brings his live show to Sydney's Norwest Convention Centre on Saturday 26 September 2026, and if the ticket tiers already selling out are any guide, a fair slice of Western Sydney is going.

Who is Ilaiyaraaja

If you need the credentials, they are absurd. Ilaiyaraaja, known as the Isaignani (roughly, the musical genius), has composed more than 7,000 songs and scored over 1,500 films, and he holds some of India's highest honours, including the Padma Vibhushan. Across the 1970s and 1980s he more or less rebuilt South Indian film music, marrying Tamil melody and folk to full orchestral arrangement in a way nobody had done before. To give you a sense of the shadow he casts, a young A.R. Rahman played keyboards in his troupe before becoming, well, A.R. Rahman. This is a living legend, and living legends do not tour forever.

Getting a ticket

Tickets are through tktdig and priced in tiers, from $119 all the way up to $850 for the Maestro VVIP experience. A few tiers, including the VVIP and VIP A, had already sold out when I looked, which tells you what you need to know about demand. Doors open at 5:30pm.

One thing to note before you buy: all sales are final, with no returns or exchanges, so lock in the date before you commit. If you are down in Victoria, he also plays Melbourne's Palais Theatre the week before, and there is always more on around Sydney or across the country.
