DJ Deepika Brings Rhythms Of The South to Sydney
DJ Deepika is the official DJ of the Chennai Super Kings, which means she has played to IPL crowds the size of a small country, usually in a saree, usually with the bass turned all the way up. At the end of July she brings that energy to Sydney twice in two nights: a South Indian party called Rhythms Of The South, and, the day before, a beginner DJ workshop where the only gear you need is the phone in your pocket. I have neither rhythm nor a saree, but I know a good night when I see one.
The party: Rhythms Of The South
Rhythms Of The South returns after a big 2025, and the Sydney edition takes over the basement of ARQ Nightclub in Darlinghurst on Friday 31 July 2026, running 9pm to 3am. DJ Deepika, billed as the Queen Of Vibes, headlines, joined by Sydney's own MGUNZ and SYBZ, with a special appearance from Aathi. Expect the full production: heavy lighting, a serious sound rig, and a live percussionist jamming over the DJ set, which sounds gimmicky right up until you are in the room, at which point it very much is not. It is an 18-plus night, so bring photo ID, and ARQ runs a smart-casual dress code. Tickets start at $30 (students $25) and were filling fast at the time of writing.

Rhythms Of The South Sydney ticketsThe workshop: learn to DJ off your phone
The day before the party, Deepika and her partner DJ Navz run something genuinely different: Australia's first-ever Mobile DJ Workshop, built for absolute beginners. No decks, no software, no music background. You bring a phone and a free DJ app, and over an evening you learn the fundamentals, including how to mix one track smoothly into the next. It is open to ages 10 to 60, which is a polite way of saying bring the kids and the uncle who is convinced he could have been a DJ. It runs Thursday 30 July, 6pm to 10:30pm, at Reg Byrne Community Centre in Wentworthville, and the $55 ticket includes dinner.

Sydney Mobile DJ Workshop ticketsWho is DJ Deepika
Deepika describes herself, accurately, as India's leading female DJ for Tamil music. She was the first female DJ in South India to feature on channels like Star Vijay, Zee Tamil and Colors, the first-ever female DJ to perform at the IPL, and she is now the official DJ of the Chennai Super Kings alongside DJ Zen. She has played everywhere from Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan's wedding to stages across more than 30 countries, and she carries Tamil music and culture with her, right down to performing in a saree. The numbers, if you like numbers: 700-plus club gigs, 500-plus private shows, 50-plus concerts, and 15-plus awards. Her genres run Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bollywood, Punjabi, pop, hip hop and EDM, which covers roughly every request your family could throw at her. Follow her on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.

The full run: Sydney and Melbourne
Rhythms Of The South and the workshop both travel south to Melbourne straight after. Here is the whole run across both cities.
Going along
Two quick logistics notes. The party is 18-plus, so bring a current Australian driver's license, proof-of-age card or passport, and skip the sportswear and thongs (ARQ's dress code, not mine). The workshop is the opposite: all ages from 10 to 60, and far more about learning than late nights. Both are ticketed through JustEasyBook and both were filling fast, so book rather than rock up on the night. If you are down south, the Melbourne leg has its own party and workshop, and there is always more on around Sydney or further afield.
Whether you want to dance to Tamil bangers at 1am or learn to drop them yourself off an app, Deepika has a night for you. I will be the one near the back, not in a saree, quietly requesting A.R. Rahman.
